Keywords are at the core of driving traffic with SEO.

A keyword is a word or phrase that’s related to your website or your business.

These are the terms people search for in search engines.

The goal of driving traffic with SEO is to rank in the top search engine results pages for your chosen keywords.

To take the example of a pet supply store, you might target keywords such as:

  • pet supplies 
  • dog supplies
  • cat supplies
  • buy pet supplies online, and so on.

These are the terms your potential customers are entering into search engines to find the type of service you offer. So if they find your site on the search results page and click your link they go to your website.

Finding Good Keywords

Your SEO strategy starts with identifying good keywords. These should be keywords that relate to your website and that your potential customers are likely to search.

Luckily, you don’t have to think of keywords yourself. There are tools that can help.

One of the easiest ones is the Google Keyword Tool, which is free to use.

All you have to do is set up an AdWords account.

Look for keywords that have a high search volume and low competition.

High search volume means many people are searching for the term.

Low competition is important because that means there are fewer websites targeting those same keywords. 

For example, the keyword pet supplies used above is actually not a good one because there is too much competition. 

It would be impossible to rank for it because there are so many others who already are.

Try using more unique keywords instead, so you have less competition.

Search volume doesn’t have to be extremely high. As long as it has several thousand searches or more a month, it’s sufficient.

Remember that keywords can be phrases but be careful not to choose phrases that are too long since they will be difficult to incorporate into your content in a way that is smooth and seems organic to the reader. 

Using Keywords

In years past, Internet marketers had complicated systems for using keywords that included calculating density, identifying secondary and tertiary terms, etc. 

Today, people aren’t so concerned because the search engines are smarter. Their algorithms are more complex and they can find you. You only need to choose a few search terms to do basic SEO.

There are no hard and fast rules for using keywords, merely some general guidelines. 

It’s good to use keywords in your titles and sub-titles.

Generally, near the top of your content is a good place to put them, such as in your first paragraph. 

Be sure to use a keyword several times inside an article or post on your website, but not so much that it is awkward or doesn’t sound like it is written for a human to read. 

Remember, ultimately every piece of content on your site is for your visitor to read and you want it to be helpful and interesting to them. 

Use your keywords naturally everywhere you use them in the written content on your website, descriptions of images, and anywhere else you have text.

Watch your website’s analytics. It takes some time to see results from keyword changes. Give it at least 60 days. You may see changes more quickly but this is a good target.

Analytics tell you how much traffic is coming from which source and for which keywords.

You can monitor this data and make changes when needed.

Taking some time to think about and choose good keywords and incorporate them on your website everywhere possible will be well worth it in the long run.
